Tobin Mueller – Fly Me To The Moon from “Standard Deviations”

A romantic homage to determined dreamers as well as the brave astronauts who actually flew to the moon, this etherial version of “Fly Me to the Moon” is a new piano solo from the 2018 ensemble jazz album “Standard Deviations”. Composed by Bart Howard (originally titled “In Other Words”), it has long been a beloved jazz standard. After stating the tune, Mueller lifts the listener with variations reminiscent of both Bill Evans and Keith Jarret, creating a calm yet stirring journey. You can well imagine yourself surfing the stars as he plays.

“Fly Me To The Moon” is from Volume Two of “Standard Deviations” – a collection of the greatest Jazz Standards of all time. Melodies deviate one into another and arrangements deviate from the standard originals to create a fresh, hip, innovative sound. The top notch contemporary jazz musicians that appear on the record deftly bind together blues, funk, fusion, smooth and post-bop jazz. 33 classics arranged into 24 tracks over 2 CDs.

REVIEWS:

“Consistently intriguing and colorful, spirited and unpredictable, Standard Deviations puts the focus on Tobin Mueller’s vivid imagination and his obvious love for this timeless material. Well worth exploring.”
– Scott Yanow, jazz journalist/historian

“An amazing jazz amalgam that showcases the great players Mueller chose to record with. But even more so, it captures at its zenith Mueller’s genius ability to dance in and out of motifs and themes while paying such great respect to the jazz composers he ‘quotes’. He makes the intertwining of the composer’s intent with his own interpretation sound effortless, expansive, beautiful and awesome…”
